Choosing Your Domain Name

Date: 26 Sep 2009 Comments: 0

When choosing our domain name we need to understand how important it is to the success of our website. I will list a couple of things to keep in mind.

The Name Itself

When choosing your domain name make sure it is highly relevant to your site as possible. What do I mean by this? Well if you blog about “Fishing Equipment”, you would want to go with something that is close to your niche, for example “www.onlinefishingequipment.com”. While it may be hard to find a domain name like that, there are a million different ways you can flip that and or make it close to “fishing equipment”. So why do I need to make my domain name relevant? Well believe it or not, the more relevant your domain name is then the better it will be in the search engines.

The Length of the Domain

With all of the good and short domains pretty much taken, it can be pretty hard to find one. We all would love to have www.myblog.com or better yet www.toblog.com. That would be great in itself and probably wouldn’t require that much search engine optimization! Well even though you can’t get good and short domains like that, we still need to make it as length-less as possible. You wouldn’t want to have to go to myspace everyday and type in www.myspaceforeveryindividualintheworld.com now would you??

How Long To Keep

Everytime you go to buy a domain you have the option to renew every year or not. Since I suppose you’ll be taking this site seriously, I recommend to check the renew option. It will only be the same amount you paid for it per year. A good thing about auto-renewing a domain is it’s not recognized as spam in Google, because spammers don’t renew.

Summary

I know whenever you go to the domain checker you can get excited and quickly pick a domain name to use for your site. You need to enforce the name itself, the length, and the renewal option into your thinking!
